The Outer Hebrides in Scotland boast some of the most stunning landscape in the UK, making them a great place for tourists. We take you through some top reasons to visit. One is the Isle of Lewis, the most populous of the islands, with 6000 people in Stornoway alone. There are archeological sites that predate the Egyptian pyramids (such as the Neolithic Callanish Stones) and the most consistent surf in Europe. There’s also a community-owned castle that’s worth visiting and some great abseiling down the many cliffs.

A second reason to visit the Outer Hebrides is the Isle of Harris, which features some extremely diverse landscape. The east coast is very rocky and harsh, whereas the west coast features more traditional views and sandy beaches set against a backdrop of mountains. The landscape appears slightly lunar and is home to the oldest rock in the world, the Lewisian Gneiss. There are many locks, meadows and hills to explore, along with lots of castles and some great fishing that any angler will love.

We also recommend the lovely Isle of North Uist. Anglers can often get a whole freshwater loch to themselves as there are so many of them. Also, 9000 seal pups are born on the island every year so it’s great for nature lovers. You’ll also enjoy the fantastic arts center and the fact that, at low tide, you can get across to the Isle of Vallay, where you’ll find a deserted mansion. With 13 miles from north to south to explore, you won’t get bored.

The otters, other wildlife and flowers also make the Isle of South Uist a great place to explore. As well as lovely contrasting cliffs and valleys, you’ll love the 20 miles of white shell beaches. You can also explore the traditional way of life, with Hebridean traditions such as peat cutting, seaweed collecting and wool drying all still very common. For a great day out, you should also visit the Loch Druidibeg nature reserve to complete your brilliant stay on the island.

Lastly, the Islands of St Kilda are amazing. They offer the most dramatic landscape in the UK and are a group of volcanic islands located 40 miles west of the main archipelago. The whole place is owned by the National Trust and you can go and see an abandoned village as the place is mostly uninhabited. The islands are a World Heritage Site and, with over 1 million birds including the most guillemots in the world, is also the most important sea bird breeding station in North West Europe.
