Holidays are meant to be a time when you are unwinding from all life’s pressures. This feeling of being free can intoxicate people and some will end up doing things that they would never normally consider. But there are some things that you should never do while you are on holiday and they are listed below.

 

- Buying illegal drugs is something that you should never do in a foreign country under no circumstances. It doesn’t matter if everyone seems to be doing it in this exotic location; you should steer well clear of this. In most countries around the world you will be in serious trouble if you are caught with illegal substances tourists make this mistake all the time.

 

- Avoid talking about the politics or culture of any country you visit during your stay. This could easily get you into a lot of hot water. Your opinions should not be shared with others while you are in that country; if you want to say something, wait until you are in your own country.

 

- It is very important that you don’t have any altercations with anyone else while you are on holiday and this is especially true of the local people. If locals feel that a tourist is threatening one of their countrymen, then don’t be surprised if they all gang up to help; there have been many occasions where tourists have ended up in a bad way because of a row with a local while on holiday. In some eastern countries you also want to avoid being overly assertive as this can be viewed as being confrontational.

 

- Just because you are abroad doesn’t mean that the normal safety rules don’t apply. Make sure you continue to follow the rules of the road and never drink and drive. When it comes to being safe, it is important that you don’t take any risks that you would not take in your own country.

 

- Getting the balance right between relaxation and being alert to the possibility of crime is essential. But remember not to be too paranoid.

Essentially the most outstanding points of interest are Bury St. Edmunds Abbey, St. Mary’s Church and St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

The ruins of the abbey can be found in the very middle of town. The abbey was a shrine to Saint Edmund but, sadly, was destroyed during the 14th century and was mainly dismantled with its Dissolution during the 16th century. Today the ruined abbey is famend for its wonderful gardens.

St. Mary’s Church, which was one of the buildings within the abbey, really is well worth a visit. It was constructed as a Norman church in the twelfth century and was comprehensively restored all through the centuries (14th, sixteenth and nineteenth) and though not one of the authentic construction remains today components may be dated back to the {13th|thirteenth} century. Of particular note is the west window which features excellent stained glass.
