Portugal’s Best Beaches - Which Places Should You Go To?
Written by MichaelZ on April 14, 2011 – 3:52 am -Portugal is a lovely country with lots of great attractions. Our guide takes you through some of the best beaches and beach towns. For example, the Costa do Sol is extremely popular with tourists. Also sometimes known as the Estoril Coast, it extends 32km west of Lisbon. Its two major resorts are Estoril and Cascais, although there are others. It was once considered the preserve of the wealthy but it now attracts a vast range of tourists, mostly from Northern Europe.
Of course, we can’t have a guide on Portugal’s beaches and not include the Algarve. This is situated at the southern tip of Portugal and its beautiful, clean sandy beaches have made it massively popular with tourists. There are lots of coves and caves to explore, as well as some grottos that are only accessible by boat. There are lovely towns and resorts such as Albufeira and Praia da Rocha, with a backdrop of rock formations. Also visit the cove at Lagos, a former Moorish town with a deepwater harbor.
We also recommend a visit to Costa Verde. Here you can find some of the most windswept, dramatic seas in all of Europe, which more than make up for the cooler sea temperature. If you like sandy beaches, then visit Ponte de Lima. It’s also well worth visiting the resort of Espinho and the beaches of Ofir and Povoa do Varzim, where you can find fantastic amenities such as bars, restaurants and water sports. Costa Verde is near Galicia in Spain and extends along Portugal’s northern coastline.
For another beautiful destination, try the Beiras. Here you can find beautiful sandy beaches from Praia de Leirosa all the way up to Praia de Espinho. The Beiras are near the centre of the country, north of Lisbon. You can visit the popular resort of Buarcos for a lively, bustling atmosphere, or for something a little bit quieter, Costa Nova is a wonderful choice. Backing onto the expanse of the Atlantic, you’ll find strong currents and heavy currents as well as a great vacation.
Portugal is also home to one of the top 20 beaches in Europe – Praia da Adraga, which you should definitely try to visit. It’s pretty hard to reach by public transport, but the effort is definitely worth it as once you get there you’ll benefit from lots of space and seclusion, as well as endless tall cliffs and clear blue water. It’s close to Sintra, which is said to be one of the world’s most romantic towns, as well as Lisbon, which is the capital city of Portugal.
