Making An Airline Pilot Salary

Written by MichaelZ on October 2, 2011 – 10:34 am -

Now that you have climbed your way through the ranks of general aviation and have accumulated sufficient flying hours to qualify for an airline interview, what can you expect an Airline Pilot Salary to be? Of course there is no fixed salary amount for every job even if the aircraft type is the same. Salaries will differ for a variety of reasons such as who you are working for, which country you are working in, your seniority within the comapny and of course whether you are a Captain or a co pilot.

Pilots will usually obtain a regional job prior to a major airline. Also known as commuter airlines these positions entail flying 50 to 100 seat turbo prop or jet aircraft. Generally know to fly the pilots quite hard with some flying up to a thousand hours per year on domestic operations. Co Pilots can expect to make a Pilot Salary of between twenty to forty thousand dollars per year and Captains will earn anywhere between 35 thousand and up to a low six figure salary.

The next step from a Regional airline is on to that of a Major Airline. Remember this can include cargo flights as well as passenger. Pilot jobs with UPS and Fed ex are highly valued as they offer equivalent and sometimes better conditions than the major carriers. The flying can be both domestic and overseas sectors generally on larger jet aircraft. A new Co Pilot will earn between thirty to sixty thousand dollars whereas a senior Co Pilot can earn a low six figure salary. Captains can earn an Airline Pilot Salary of between 120 thousand up to the mid 200k

As I have mentioned many times in previous articles the income of a general aviation pilot is very low and it may not seem worth it to put so much time, effort and money to obtain a pilot license. How ever you can see from this article that if you stick with it it well worth all of it.

Do Airline pilots need to know how to swim?

Mr Quiet asked:

I was reading on the Qantas Airline pilot application they ask a question can you swim 50 meters fully clothed and tread water after that for 3 minutes! Do you think if you said I can’t swim they would consider my application? If they don’t could I sue them for discrimination?

How does the Airline pilot start out?

JH asked:

I’m a young private pilot interested in commercial aviation. Now, I know you can go to schools for it like Embry Riddle and such or do the Armed forces route, but how do you get a job at an airline? Do you just apply and they train you on a low level express aircraft? And how do you move up?

Thanks

Jakayla
