The airlines websites is good idea it would almost always cost more not to call the airline to buy two oneway tickets.

I would suggest comparing prices between a round trip and 2 one-ways. I got a better deal by booking to one-ways from Oakland to San Diego then doing a round trip. It just depends on dates and times you plan to travel. I would suggest trying this website:
